Contrary to what you have been told for decades, man-made fluoride that is added pervasively to your drinking water and most of your dental products such as toothpaste, can actually lead to fluorosis, a condition marked by stained and weakened teeth. This has been notably pointed out by studies that compare the teeth condition of communities who practice water fluoridation with those that don’t. Even worse, recent studies have shown that fluoride can result in other ailments like hyperactivity and/or lethargy, arthritis, lowered thyroid function, lowered IQ, dementia, disrupted immune system, genetic damage, cell death, cancers, deactivated essential enzymes and even lower life span. If you are the type of consumer who easily falls for those tempting toothpaste advertisements, then maybe you should think again!

Fluoride in its natural form is actually an essential trace element, which we need in only small amounts. The problem is that the unnatural form of fluoride, which is known as sodium fluoride, is a far cry from its natural form. Dismayingly, the unnatural form of fluoride that is added to our water and toothpaste is a chemical by-product of steel, cement, phosphate, and nuclear weapon manufacturing.

Further, recent researches are backing up previous studies regarding the negative effects of fluoride and have yielded concrete results showing that fluoride can do more harm than help. In the March 2014 Journal of Lancet Neurology, it was reported that experts now officially identify fluoride as one of the six additional industrial chemicals that is causing developmental neurotoxicity such as autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other cognitive impairments. These experts further suggest that if we want to control a pandemic of developmental toxicity, urgent formation of a new international clearinghouse should be established.

On Avoiding Fluoride

Living in a community where water is not fluoridated is perhaps the best way to avoid sodium fluoride, but since 65% of our water supplies are fluoridated, and because a total ban against established practices like this would seem longer to take effect, other steps may be needed to reduce our fluoride intake.

Purifying water in the kitchen using water filters that contain activated alumina may help reduce fluoride in our drinking waters, but this still leaves water used in the shower, bathtubs, and swimming pools with fluoride. One recommended way to solve this problem is to purchase a whole-house fluoride filtration system though they are a bit pricey at $2500 and up.
