LiveScience interviewed a number of doctors and sleep specialists about the effects of sleep on the body and here is what the experts think.

According to Dr. William Kohler, medical director of the Florida Sleep Institute, sleep is one of the best things we can do to help our mind and body work at their optimum. Without sleep, our performance will decline and satisfactory functioning is far out. Dr. Kohler also highlights that aside from increased work hazards and absences, lack of sleep could potentially trigger health problems like immune system decline and weight gain.

Dr. Sheila Tsai, sleep expert and assistant professor of medicine at National Jewish Health in Colorado, also believes that sleep deprivation can wreak havoc to the body as it increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases, major depression, and sleep apneas. Other medical experts interviewed by unilaterally reminding people of the importance of proper sleep to promote general well-being.

Indeed, a good night’s sleep is one of the best presents you can ever give yourself as it not only decreases the body’s risk of catching illnesses but is also proven to bring more clarity and focus to the mind.
